Supreme WinnerSunshower – Richard Gourley - S.P.U.D. PSP Products Used: PSP Plexiglas Corrugated Clear & Heatstop
The project began by experimenting with various bits and bobs at a beach house property to construct a solar outdoor shower suitable for not only washing off sand when coming in from the beach, but also with full temperature control and constant water flow from a garden hose that the “black bag” showers did not provide. To succeed commercially the designer realised that the invention needed to be resilient, high quality, and able to colour match to individual houses. It would need to be perceived as a fixture that would add value to a property. PSP Suntuf polycarbonate had been used in early prototypes for the external cladding. Then the designer discovered clear corrugated PSP PlexiGlas. The one step better, a different product was decided upon which was a product with a reflective coating to deflect heat – PSP PlexiGlas Heatstop. With pipes sandwiched between clear corrugated PSP PlexiGlas on one side (the side facing the sun), and PSP PlexiGlas Heatstop on the other. The project concluded that the SunShower not only looked good, it provided a privacy screen, and it worked!
Judges Comment: "This beautifully finished unit rates highly on the judging criteria. It demonstrates a particularly original use of materials by its reversal of original intent. The ecological benefits, unique design and technical development ensure the Sunshower is a stand-out in design." |
